Earthquake Engineering

GGC has experience in seismic site response analysis and liquefaction triggering assessment for numerious sites located in Vancouver, Victoria, Kitmate and Pond Inelt.

In GGC, we used both simplified and numerical methods to evaluate the potential of soil liquefaction at seismic active sites. The following simplified methods were used at the site screen level:

  • NCEER -used for sites where only SPT values are available

  • Robertson and Wride (1998/2002)-used for site CPT data are available

  • Idriss and Boulanger (2014)-used for site CPT data are available

At the detailed design level, GGC have the capacity to perform advanced site response analysis, and soil/structure interaction analysis, including 1 dimensional shake analysis, 2 dimensional  or 3 dimensional Plaxis analysis, or Flac analysis.

In GGC, the ground deformations can be estimated using Newmark type empirical methods at the preliminary level ; at the detailed design stage  loads and deformation, induced by seismic events, can be calculated using fully coupled time-history soil and structural interaction analysis.

We are proud of  professional services in earthquake engineering. We have provided lots of optimized solutions for industry plants, BC ferry and wharf facilities located in Vancouver, Victoria, Kitmate and Pond Inlet. We have also provided seismic retrofit solutions for a few existing bridges located in seismic active areas in US.
